Credit Card Washing Prevention

Card not present fraud (CNP) involving online, phone or mail transactions reached $53.5 million in Australia alone last year, up from $32 million in 2006. Story

The growing trend of stolen credit cards being used to make small transactions in on-line payment facilities to test if the cards are yet listed as stolen (known as credit card washing), is driving up the costs and risks of on-line shops.

This fraud costs the merchant not just the bogus transaction and consequential refund fees, but also the charge-back penalties if not identified before the bank hits you with them. Additionally, there's the business cost in managing this fraud.

In some cases, aggressive fraudulent activity has caused on-line shops to cease operations altogether.

Symantec has reported this problem. Charities are particularly vulnerable as their small irregular 'donations' are difficult to differentiate between legitimate and fraudulent.

We found that banks were not able to provide a solution hence we created a telephony validation system that removes the anonymity of the shopper.

Telephony Validation Solution

Credit Card Washing

During an on-line web purchase, the Skunkworks telephony validation system calls the shopper to associate them with an identifiable telephone number.

This removes the anonymity under which fraudulent users previously thrived.

The seller is also provided with an audio voice print of the shopper, thereby enhancing the identification.

Skunkworks telephony validation is immediately available as a hosted service or as a system installed into your own environment.

Our clients using this system have reported an immediate cessation of this type of fraud.
