Telephony Software - SkunkWorks Australia has created a telephony software toolkit, Telco Perl, which leverages the open source Perl language that has unlimited flexibility, and brings this into a telecommunications environment.
Traditional proprietary systems are restricted in ther capability, whereas Telco Perl offers flexibility to help build a variety of voice applications.
Telco Perl allows people to write telephony services in the open source language of Perl, and then convert them into telco-grade solutions.
The software controls a vast array of functions such as switch a call, play a message, check a PIN from a database, send a fax, set up a conference, turn text into speech, send SMS, create customer billing records, and convert calls into voice over internet protocol. It works seamlessly across traditional telco networks as well as the emerging IP networks.
There are thousands of Perl modules freely available that can be downloaded and used in target applications, modules such as communicating with external systems (eg SMS gateways, databses) or modules for reporting and statistics, effectively allowing leverage from a huge amount of work that has already been used in solutions in practically every industry.
